Dominance over Women by Men Essay - 905 Words
How do roles define a man or woman? A famous writer once stated, When women are seen with pen in hand, they are met immediately with shrieks commanding a return to that life of pain which their writing had interrupted, a life devoted to the womens work, of needle and distaffâ⬠(Archangela Tarabotti), thoroughly acknowledges the various struggles experienced by a typical woman in the 19th century. Henrik Ibsenââ¬â¢s play, A Dolls House illustrates the 19th century as a time period when equality among genders was not accepted. The roles of men and women in 19th century consist dominantly of the male, which is exhibited through the household, society, and the workforce. Women were often dishonoured by society, particularly men, in order to establish a belief based on the fact that a womanââ¬â¢s purpose is solely to raise their children. Harsh criticism was a result, if societys expectations were not met. Society beliefs at that time were very restricted towards women. For example, it was strictly stated that women should not be educated and were not permitted to study. However, occasionally few females were able to study; however, they were only able to study on the condition that her studies would interfere with the housework (Helena Wojtczak). The male based society influences Torvald as it shapes him into a controlling husband. Since, society looks down upon women in t he play; Torvald does not want to indicate to people that a woman can influence his decision, specifically Nora.
